Participation in the 1st Greek Alternative Tourism Expo

Paths of Greece proudly announces participation in the NOSTOS Greek Alternative Tourism Expo 2016! It will take place in the town of Nafpaktos from October 14th to 17th. It will be our pleasure to see you at our stand (#31), in order to inform you on our activities and the latest developments in our projects and in the worldwide hiking community. For this expo, Paths of Greece teams up with Ecotourism-Greece.com, the top website on alternative tourism activities in Greece, in a new alliance, aiming at making Greece a worldwide ecotourism destination.

Ηiking Trails: Tourism or forestry engineering?

The article is available only in Greek. It is our answer to the recent law project of the Greek Ministry of the Environment that aims to define what hiking trails are and who is responsible for them. It also treats of the guidelines for trail design, trail blazing and other matters. Our core position is that trails are mainly a matter of Tourism, as they combine nature, culture and they have a socio-economic benefit. We believe that the Ministry of the Environment should only have a consultative role on this subject.

The first “Friendship Trail” in Greece!

For the first time, a Greek trail signed the “Friendship Trail” agreement between trail #2 of Sifnos Trails and trail 18-1 of Jeju Olle trail (South Korea). In the context of the Friendship Trails programme of the World Trails Network, the Mayor of Sifnos, Mr Andreas Babounis and the President of Jeju Olle Foundation Mrs. Suh Myong, did sign an agreement linking the two trails! The Jeju Olle trail is more than 425 km long and attracts about 2.000.000 hikers a year!

New project in Prespa lakes!

Following the pilot sign-posting project of two trails in Prespa lakes, we have started the investigation of the area to find new trails! In co-operation with the Society for the Protection of Prespa lakes, we are scanning this beautiful place to find the best hiking and cycling routes through which the visitors will enjoy the most of what Prespa has to offer in matter of history and nature!

New video about the trails of Sifnos

Following other promotion actions, the Municipality of Sifnos, in collaboration with Giannis Kontos (Photo Kontos), has created a short video to show the walking trails of the island! Through the imagery, one can admire the characteristic landscape of Sifnos, the incredible trails and the monuments that are along the 100 kilometers long trails network.

Participation at the Grekland Panorama Fair

The Municipality of Sifnos, in colaboration with Paths of Greece, has participated at the Grekland Panorama tourism fair, in Stockholm. Swedish citizens are quite avid hikers, but there is too little available information for them to be able to access trails in Greece. During the fair, we have presented the Sifnos Trails project. Special attention was given to the recently launched Android application about the trails! We received many positive comments about our level of preparation and we believe that many people were convinced that a hiking trip to Sifnos is really worth it!

We support Project Pathways in Ikaria island!

Put on the ecotourism radar by recent media coverage and its classification as a blue zone, Ikaria has seen a sudden surge in visitors. Every year, more and more campers and hikers from all over the world are attracted to the island by its rugged and uncharted terrain. However, with so many visitors leaving behind new paths and clearings, the tourist footprint is beginning to take its toll on Ikaria’s delicate ecosystem.

Far from trying to stop visitors from seeing the island’s magnificent natural beauty, Project Pathways is an initiative to promote sustainable tourism. However, we can’t do it alone! With a task force of volunteers, the Ikarian Centre aims to reopen and remark the island’s overgrown pathways. Clear, well-marked pathways will allow walkers and more adventurous hikers to have maximum access with minimal environmental impact.

The project will start in Arethousa, a village of historical and cultural importance. In the face of the Greek financial crisis, building sustainable hiking paths will help the local community to develop eco-tourism. We also hope to empower the local community, proving that a healthy environment and local traditions are valuable for sustainable development.

Summary:

During 12 days in June, volunteers will work on a 3-km path leading to a beach that is currently only accessible by sea.

When: 4-16 June 2016

Where: Arethousa, Ikaria

Accommodation: Shared accommodation provided at the Ikarian center

Digital Application for Sifnos island Trails!

Sifnos becomes the first Greek island to have an application dedicated to its hiking trails. The application Sifnos Trails is a digital field guide for the trails network SifnosTrails. The total length of the network exceeds 100 km and is divided into 19 beautiful trails. The project started in 2015 and is being managed by the Municipality of Sifnos in collaboration with “Paths of Greece”. The ultimate aim of the Sifnos Trails project is to help the island’s visitors explore its natural and cultural beauties in a pleasant way.

The application offers off-line maps and detailed description, an interactive list of POIs and photos for each one of the 19 routes. In the field, the app provides active navigation to the hiker. All app elements, the text, the photos, the routes and the cartography are genuine information collected, written and compiled by the group Paths of Greece. The creation of the application was funded by Aegean Speed Lines. You can download it for FREE on Google Play here.
